This reserve protects a small area of tropical rainforest, part of the huge Choco Reserve, which stretches from Panama through the Pacific coast of Colombia to the Ecuadorian northwest. The existing forests of this region, for example that of El Pambilar, are characterized by two special aspects: the high humidity and the great diversity of species.
