The Limoncocha Reserve is located along the northern banks of the Rio Napo between the Rio Coca and the Rio Aguarico and consists of rainforest and swamps. This area, recognized as one of the most important ecological systems in South America, is also under constant pressure from oil extraction. Scientists have identified more than 450 bird species and many unusual tree species are present.

Within the reserve lies Limoncocha Lake, which is known as an excellent place for birdwatching.

Lowland Kichwa families live near the lake and now live on small farms. The petroleum activities in the 1980s and 1990s had a negative impact on this area and its inhabitants. Therefore, the villages are open to ecotourism initiatives and other initiatives that respect their fragile ecosystem.

You can get into the reserve via Coca or Lago Agrio, from the town of Limoncocha. You can also take the river from Coca to Puerto Palos or to Puerto Pompeya, an hour and a half downstream.
