Riobamba (capital of the province of Chimborazo) is a pleasant, friendly town that always feels a bit chilly due to the fresh winds that descend from the snowy Chimborazo volcano (6,310 m).
The center has beautiful colonial buildings and churches and there are beautiful views of the surrounding volcanic mountain peaks. On market days (Wednesdays, but especially on Saturdays) the city is full of Indians, who color the streets with their ponchos and scarves.
Indian women The city center is compact and easy to visit. The Convento de la Concepción religious museum is known as one of the best in Ecuador.
There is a lot to visit around the city: you can take the train to the “Devil’s Nose” (la Nariz del Diablo), a mountain with a gradient of 5.5%, where the train alternates between the front and back windows.
You can hike to the refuge on the Chimborazo. The market in Guamote on Thursday morning is also very worthwhile
