Native health, reproduction and spirituality

Our first visit is to the Garden of Dreams where we learn about some plants of great importance in traditional Andean medicine. Then we learn about the community midwives. A local midwife discusses how ancient traditions and indigenous knowledge are still used today. After a brief explanation of the health situation in the area, we learn about the daily work of an indigenous midwife in the village of La Calera.

Afterwards we take a short walk to the sacred site of the community to perform a ritual bath where we meet with the Yachak/Shaman to observe the demonstration of their knowledge and be part of cleansing and purification. This Andean ritual forms a connection between the human being, the soul, the cosmos and nature making them one being. This is a group demonstration. Optionally with an extra cost one can take an individual healing bath.

Afterwards we enjoy a delicious typical lunch prepared by a group of women from the community. When you want and time permits you can still take a walk in the Cuicocha Lake.

Birdwatching: the birds of Intag

For this excursion, the guide will pick you up at the hotel at 04:00 in the morning and drive to Intag. There the driver will drop you off in the Azabi community and with the guide you will start a five hour hike through the cloud forest where you will have the chance to see different types of hummingbirds, tanagers, manakins, toukans etc. After the walk you will get a nice lunch and then drive back to Otavalo.

Artesanate workshops and botanical garden

The guide takes us to the community of Cachibiro - San Rafael to visit an artisan family that makes works with the totora plant. We can participate in the elaboration of a handicraft in this material. Then we visit the Peguche Waterfall, where we take a short walk and the guide explains the importance of this place for the indigenous population and their traditions and festivities. We then visit a family dedicated to traditional weaving and learn how to use the backstrap loom or calluha and the pedal loom and learn the process of dyeing sheep wool using natural plants. We then visit the Nanda Mañachi workshop, a traditional workshop where different musical instruments from the Andean countries are made. José Luis teaches us how to build a musical instrument called Palla. He also gives a short demonstration of each instrument delighting us with some beautiful traditional melodies. You can choose to have lunch with a local family or in the town of Cotacachi. Afterwards we visit the Garden of Dreams to learn about some plants and their importance in traditional Andean medicine.

Visit to El Angel National Park

El Angel National Park is known for the large amount of frailejones (Espeletia Pycnophylla) and small trees of Polylepis known as the paper tree, plants endemic to the area.

By private car we travel in an hour and a half from Otavalo to the park. There we start a pleasant walk to the lake "El Voladero" which is located at an altitude of 3800 meters. After this nature walk, we head to Salinas, a town where a tasty lunch awaits us. In the afternoon the driver will be waiting for us to take us back to Otavalo.

Recommended: sun protection, raincoat, polar fleece or warm sweater, water, camera.

Note: previously this excursion was combined with a return train ride from Salinas to Ibarra. As of June 2020 the train service is discontinued. Perhaps this train trip will be resumed in the future.

Cycling Mojanda Lakes and Cochasquí archeology

We leave early in the morning for the Mojanda Lakes, which are located about forty minutes from Otavalo. These lakes are located at an altitude of 3700m. The largest lake is called Kari-Cocha. From here, a beautiful bike ride begins through moorland meadows to the archaeological site of Cochasquí. Cochasquí is known for its ancient pyramids built by the Quintu-Cara people. It is a pleasant and varied bike ride with beautiful natural scenery.

Cycling from Cuicocha to Cotacachi

This mountain bike tour takes you to Cuicocha Lake and the region of Cotacachi. By private car with the guide we drive for about 45 minutes to the community of Ugshapungo. Here from an altitude of 3300 meters, not far from the Cuicocha Lake, we descend by bike for about 3 hours to 2400 meters. We pass through indigenous villages and visit the botanical garden of Turuco. On the way we visit the Cuicocha lake and the town of Cotacachi. We take our lunch in the town of Cotacachi, and there is free time to visit the town. Then we continue to the community of La Calera where we visit an indigenous family that works with tagua seeds. Then the vehicle awaits us to return to Otavalo in the afternoon.

Horseback riding to the alpaca farm

From Otavalo we drive for twenty minutes to the community of Arrayanes. There the guide gives us some explanations and introduces us to the horses. After this begins the excursion through beautiful landscapes with views of the surrounding volcanoes. After about three hours of riding, we arrive at the alpaca farm in the community of Morochos where we receive an explanation about these animals and where we also have some time to rest. Then we start our return trip.

Cycling to the Intag cloud forest

On this excursion we enjoy a morning of biking and then relax in the hot springs of Nangulvi. The subtropical valley of Intag is located southeast of the province of Imbabura and 39 km west of Cotacachi. It is a tropical zone that oscillates between 10° C to 25° C, allowing to have within its territory a great diversity of flora and fauna as well as its warm and friendly people, full of traditions and customs.

By private car, we drive to the village of Urcusiqui at 3400 meters of altitude. Here we start pedaling for about 3 to 4 hours. We descend 1800 meters, with some short climbs along the way. On the way, we notice the change of climate and vegetation from the high Andean territory through the cloud forest to the tropical valley of Intag. Arriving at the village of Nangulvi, we have lunch and rest in the hot springs of Nagulvi before returning by car.

Horseback riding to Cuicocha Lake

In private transportation we drive for 20 minutes to the community of Arrayanes. In this place the guide is waiting for us with the horses, ready to start our adventure. We pass through different landscapes in the course of the journey, we observe the crops, the Andean landscapes, and if the weather accompanies us we can observe the majestic Cayambe volcano, Taita Imbabura and Mama Cotacachi. Our final destination is the Cuicocha crater lake, located within the Cotacachi Cayapas National Park. Here we have time to visit the lake. It is important to know that horses cannot enter Cuicocha because it is a protected area.

Mojanda lakes and Fuya-Fuya mountain tour

On this excursion we explore the moorland meadows of Mojanda Lakes and the panoramic views from the top of Mount Fuya Fuya. By private car, we drive to the shores of Mojanda Lake, located at an altitude of 3,700 meters. From here begins a hike across the moor to the summit of Mount Fuya Fuya at 4,265 meters. At the summit we enjoy refreshments and views of the lake and the Imbabura, Cotacachi and Cayambe mountains. We then descend and return to Otavalo.

Imbabura volcano ascent (4639 m altitude)

We climb the Imbabura-mountain and enjoy the view over the province to which this mountain gave its name. Before sunrise, we head to the village of Casha Pampa which is located at 3300 meters altitude. Here we start the climb that lasts 5-6 hours between páramo grasslands with spectacular views of the town of Ibarra and the snow-capped Cayambe. A little further up, the road becomes rocky and we walk around a volcanic crater to the summit at 4610 meters. After a rest and refreshment, we descend.

Mandatory: good walking shoes, sun protection, fleece or sweater, water (minimum 1.5 liters), raincoat, good physical condition even at altitude.

Ascent to the Cotacachi volcano (4932 meters of altitude)

This is a high altitude ascent to the highest volcano in the region. The Cotacachi volcano called by the indigenous natives as Mama Cotacachi, in reference to the protective woman for the people of Otavalo and Cotacachi, is a dormant volcano. Its elevation is rocky with different crags in addition to presenting forests typical of the Andean zones of Ecuador. Ancient stories tell that the crater lake Cuicocha is full of the tears of the Cotacachi Mom for the sadness of not having her son by her side, the well known volcano Guagua Pichincha located in the city of Quito.

We leave before dawn and drive up to 4000 meters altitude. From here, we hike through meadows for 3 or 4 hours until we reach the snow line at about 4750 meters altitude. We rest for a while and enjoy the views of the Andes mountain range. Then we descend again and return by car to the starting point.

For safety reasons, we do not climb to the summit (4939 meters): there are times when there is erosion or strong winds at the top.

Maquipucuna cloud forest day trip

At a 2.5-hour drive from Quito you will find this beautiful lodge, in the middle of 20,000 hectares of protected forest, ranging from 1200 to 2800 meters altitude. There is a small research center at the lodge. You can make it a day trip, but it is best to stay overnight and go out with a local guide.

Day Trip from Quito – Walking Tour Agua y Vida (Papallacta)

This walking tour of 5 to 6 hours takes place between 4300 and 38300 meters above sea level. We leave Quito in the morning by car and drive to “La Virgen”. The hike starts here at its highest point: from here we descend slowly to Papallacta. On clear days you have a view of some snow-capped volcanoes: the Cotopaxi, Antisana and Cayambe. Along the way we look out for the spectacled bear, the mountain deer, the mountain tapir, paramo wolves and small mustelids. You will find partridges, the chimborazo hummingbird, the Andean gull, ducks, eagles and curiquingues, even condors and other species typical of this ecosystem. A little after noon we arrive at the hot water baths of Papallacta, where you can regain your strength. Here is a fine restaurant. In the evening a car will pick you up in Papallacta and take you back to the hotel in Quito.

Jacchigua Folkloric Ballet (Wednesday and Friday evening)

Ninety dancers, musicians, technicians and social researchers will perform a wonderful evocation of the cultural history of the Andean region over 2 hours – in a whirlwind of costumes. This performance, which has been performed for years by the Jacchigua company in Quito and in many places around the world, is considered a living museum of the original inhabitants of Ecuador. The performance takes place every Wednesday and Friday evening in the Casa de la Cultura. We buy your tickets in advance.

Colonial Quito

For this excursion, the guide will pick you up at the hotel by car. We will visit the old and the new Quito: the parliament, the presidential palace, the Plaza de Independencia and the churches of San Francisco, La Compania and the cathedral. Then we go to El Panecillo, the statue of the angel and viewpoint that perches high above Quito. The guide provides information about Quito and Ecuador. The entrance to the listed sights is subject to opening hours.

Visit to Hacienda Guachala (Cangahua)

Halfway between Quito and Otavalo is Ecuador's oldest hacienda, built on an ancient Inca temple. Now it is a hotel from which you can go on walks and horseback rides in the Indian region of Cangahua.

The Pilgrimage to El Quinche

Not far from Quito's airport is the pretty village of El Quinche with its beautiful pilgrimage site. Every November tens of thousands of pilgrims walk from Quito to El Quinche to implore the Virgin Mary of some kind. On the other side of the main road you will also find a beautiful Indian cemetery where it is sympathetically busy especially with All Saints and All Souls.

By train to Cotopaxi National Park

A tourist train takes you - via the beautiful village of Machachi - from the train station of Quito to the station El Boliche in the National Park of Cotopaxi.

Please note: as of June 2020, this excursion has been discontinued. Perhaps this train ride will continue again in the future.

Paragliding in Quito

You will float over Quito in a tandem flight with experienced instructors. Three hours of pure adrenaline.

Bird watching: Long Wattled Umbrella Bird – Rio Blanco

We leave Mindo at 5:00 AM. Today we will look for this extremely rare bird. In the same nature reserve we have the opportunity to see toucans, motmots, woodpeckers, falcons, tanagers and many other bird species. In the late morning we go to the panorama point on the Rio Blanco, a beautiful place to admire the Rio Blanco, but also to watch birds. There is an excellent restaurant here, where we will stop for lunch. After dinner we descend to an area with a wide variety of birds of prey, hummingbirds, tanagers, woodpeckers, motmots and much more.

Birdwatching: Yanacocha-Mindo

This tour departs from Quito (at 5:30 in the morning). We first trek to the upper slopes of the volcano Ruccu Pichincha where many bird species from the high mountains reside: sword-billed hummingbirds, cotingas, antpittas, tanagers, black-breasted pufflegs (an endangered species), golden-breasted pufflegs, giant hummingbirds, peregrine falcons, , and many more. We travel along the little-used road from Nono via Tandayapa to Mindo. On the way we sometimes stop to look for birds that are unique to this area. Before arriving in Mindo, we stop at the Tony Reserve, known for its hummingbirds.

Birdwatching: Mindo-San Lorenzo

This tour takes half a day: you leave at 06:00 and arrive back in Mindo about 11:00. After leaving the city you head into the cloud forest. You will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of bird species: toucans, hawks, woodpeckers, tanagers, hummingbirds, and much more. During this tour you will probably see 40 to 80 different species, depending on the weather.

Lloa – Mindo trek (2 days)

This is a two day tour departing from Quito to Lloa, a small town a few kms from the south of Quito at the foot of the Pichincha Volcano. Here we enter the forest along the "huayrapungo", which in Quechua means "door to the wind". The Mindo-Nambillo reserve is crossed by many fast-flowing rivers but there are also open fields and swamps. We trek through an old lava flow. , memory of the eruptions of the Pichincha volcano that took place between 1999 and 2002. You can only do this walk with a local guide, the trails are not marked. It is a beautiful walk, full of variety of flora and fauna and with breathtaking views. cross rivers on funiculars, trudge through muddy swamps, cut your way with the machete along overgrown paths, prepare food in the woods along the way and find a place to camp at night.

Day 1: The guide picks you up at the hotel, you drive with the guide to the foot of the Pichincha. The guide briefly goes over the journey and afterwards the trek of two days towards the cloud forest of Mindo begins. Along the way you stop for lunch and in the evening the tents are set up to spend the night.

Birdwatching: Silanche Tower – Milpe

We depart at 5:00 AM by car to Silanche, from where we follow a trail through the forest and bird watch along the road to the Silanche Tower. From this lookout tower we have a beautiful view of the forest - here you can see trogons, motmots, woodpeckers, antbirds and much more. We then follow the road to Milpe where we have the opportunity to see the moss backed tanager, a very rare species.

Walking along the Yellow House path

This extensive private forest - 500 hectares in size - has well-maintained paths that lead you high into the forest and offer beautiful views of the valley. Along the path you will find butterflies, birds and beautiful flowers. And if you're lucky, you might see armadillos, porcupines, anteaters, and maybe even the Andean spectacled bear. The trail is a five minute walk from town but is a world apart. The walk takes about three hours.

You can relax in these peaceful gardens, home to all kinds of colorful butterfly species. Here you will learn about the life of these wonderful creatures, you can feed them and take pictures as they settle on your outstretched palm.

Tubing on the Rio Mindo (Level 1)

Floating on the Rio Mindo you can enjoy the sun and the tranquility of the forest. Those who like more adventure can do the rapids of the Río Cinto or the Río Blanco. A local guide will provide you with a helmet and life jacket and keep the raft under control. Tubing is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.

This trip takes your choice of 1.5 hours, 2.5 hours or 4 hours and includes transport, equipment and guide.

Canyoning in Mindo

Equipped with ropes, harness, helmet, gloves you descend into the middle of a waterfall, or from a bridge in the river. You will be accompanied by an experienced guide who will guide you step-by-step through this unforgettable experience.

Horseback Riding in Mindo

You do not have to be a professional to participate in this activity; the horses are tame and you are accompanied by a local guide. Whether you choose a leisurely walk through the woods to view birds, butterflies and plants or set up a downhill race along the road to Nambillo - finishing with a quick dip in the river, this is a fun activity for all ages. The trip takes two hours.

Evening frog concert

At 6:30 in the evening a guide will take you into the forest. After a 10-minute walk you come to this place where there are many frogs. The guide explains the life of these wonderful animals.

Visit to orchid garden

In the village is this garden with more than 200 different orchid species. A specialized guide will give you all the explanations.

The Cotopaxi volcano downhill biking

The driver will pick you up at the hotel in the morning. The National Park is an hour's drive from Quito. On clear days you can admire the mountain from afar. After a short stop at the Mariscal Sucre information point, where you will receive some explanation about the region and the volcano, we continue to 4500 m altitude. From here we go to the refuge which is 365 meters higher. It is a very steep walk that takes us at least an hour due to the high altitude. After a break we return to the parking lot where we start the downhill. We take the bikes and descend to 3900 meters towards the Limpiopungo lake around which wild horses graze. After this we return to the hotel.

Descent of Quilotoa crater lake and visit to Tigua

The guide will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the Quilotoa crater lake. Along the way, you will make a stop in the village of Tigua, which is known for its colorful paintings that are made on both wood and sheep skins. Once in Quilotoa we first visit the viewpoint where you get a breathtaking view over this azure blue lake. We then make a steep descent to the shores of the lake; here you can either walk further or rent a kayak to go out on the lake and take pictures. Then we start the tough climb back to the rim of the crater, until we reach the car and drive back to the hotel.

Bike Tour Baños – Machay

This downhill bike ride of approximately 33 km starts in the morning in Baños. On the way we visit the waterfall of Agoyan, we stop briefly at the Rio Blanco, we cross the Rio Blanco with a cable lift and visit some beautiful waterfalls on the way.

Day trip to the rainforest

We drive from Baños to Puyupungo to the Hola Vida nature reserve. On the way we visit a wildlife sanctuary. We descend with canoes along the Rio Puyo and visit the village of Cotococha. There we eat a traditional lunch prepared by the indigenous community and we get some explanation about the local lifestyle. We then take a nice walk through the jungle and learn about the plants and animals of the Amazon. The walk ends at a waterfall where we can stand under to refresh ourselves. Then we return by car to Baños.

Rock climbing in Baños

We follow the route Baños – Inés Maria on the way to the climbing site. Together with a local guide you will stay for about three hours against the rock wall from where you have a view over the Pastaza River. You can make this trip both in the morning and in the afternoon. This activity is designed for both beginners and advanced climbers.

Rafting on the Rio Pastaza (level 4 – advanced)

This descent has a lot of rapids and now and then you have to make some adjustments. You usually stop in Las Estancias along the way for a swim in a natural pool. Then descend further to El Topo and then return to the city.

Canyoning in Cashaurco (waterfall climbing)

This sport has been practiced in Baños for several years, similar to wall climbing, but you descend into the crashing tumult of a waterfall. You practice canyoning in Chamana and in Rio Blanco where there are several impressive waterfalls ranging from 4 to 10 meters.

Riobamba city tour

Riobamba is not only surrounded by majestic mountains but also has some beautiful colonial churches. During this city walking tour, a guide will show you the most beautiful spots of the city and at the same time you will learn more about the history of Riobamba. We will visit the main city parks and get a tour of the city's cathedral. Our walk ends with a visit to the museum of Riobamba.

Bike tour from Atillo to the Amazon (1 day)

Today, during a spectacular descent of 2000 metres, we will get to know the different landscapes and ecosystems of Sangay National Park. The descent takes us from the eastern slopes of the Andes mountains all the way into the Amazon rainforest. A vehicle picks us up in Riobamba and takes us past small indigenous villages towards the south-east. After about an hour and a half's drive we arrive at the Atillo lakes. These lakes are considered the most beautiful highland lakes in Ecuador and lie at an altitude of about 3500 metres. The lakes are often shrouded in a mysterious mist and form the starting point of our descent. The ride is about 47 km long and follows a quiet road right through Sangay National Park. From the paramo we descend to the cloud forest and end up in the rainforest. Along the way we come across several waterfalls and enjoy the lush vegetation of orchids, ferns and mosses. When we have about 23 km in our legs, we pass through a 700-metre-long tunnel and then continue cycling along the road that winds its way to the small village of 9 de Octubre. This village lies at about 1500 metres and is the end point of our route. Before the vehicle takes us back to Riobamba, we first visit a viewpoint that offers a magnificent view over the rainforest and the Upano and Abanico rivers.

Bike tour of the hidden valleys

This magnificent bike ride takes us past various indigenous villages far from the well-known tourist routes. We cycle through beautiful valleys northwest of the Chimborazo, all the way to Ambato, in the province of Tungurahua. This 50 km ride offers us a magnificent view over the high mountains. Optionally, we can start the tour with a hike on the Chimborazo. This hike takes us from the first mountain refuge at an altitude of 4,800 m to the second mountain refuge at an altitude of 5,000 m.

Bike tour from Atillo to the Amazon (2 days)

During this adventurous two-day trip we cycle along the eastern slopes of the Andes to the Amazon rainforest. On the second day we will discover the secrets of the jungle. This trip is phenomenal for anyone who loves nature and action.

Day 1: At 7:00 in the morning a vehicle picks us up in Riobamba. We drive along a small road in a south-easterly direction, passing several indigenous villages on the way. After a two-hour drive we arrive at the Atillo lakes, located at an altitude of 3,500 m. These lakes are considered the most beautiful highland lakes in the region. The lakes are often shrouded in a mysterious mist and form the starting point for the downhill ride. The ride takes us from the Andean highlands all the way to the jungle town of Macas. This challenging, 80 km route takes us along a quiet and partly unpaved road through Sangay National Park. From the paramo we first descend to the cloud forest and then further down to the tropical rainforest. Along the way we come across several beautiful waterfalls and can enjoy the lush vegetation of orchids, ferns and mosses. When we already have 23 km in our legs, we pass through a 700-metre-long tunnel. Then we continue along a winding road towards the rainforest. We spend the night in a lodge in the rainforest reserve.

Day 2: Today we take part in a five-hour hike through the rainforest; during the hike the guide explains the medicinal plants and the customs of the indigenous Amazon people. The hike takes us on to a magnificent waterfall where you can take a refreshing dip, the ideal place to take beautiful photos. In the afternoon we return via Baños to Riobamba.

Hiking in Chimborazo National Park

Today we visit Ecuador's highest mountain (6268 m) and also the closest point on earth to the sun. In the morning we leave for Chimborazo where we first make a short stop in Colta to visit the Balbanera Church. This is the oldest church in Ecuador. Then we drive into the National Park where we stop at the first refuge at 4800 meters. We make a short walk to the Condor Lake at 5100 meters and then we descend back to 5000 meters for a hot cup of coffee at the second refuge. Both during the hike and during the car ride we can admire beautiful landscapes and local fauna such as vicuñas. We then return to the car and drive further until San Juan, where we get a delicious lunch at a Belgian-Ecuadorian family. From here we leave back to the hotel.

Biking in Chimborazo National Park

In the morning we drive towards Chimborazo, first making a short stop in Colta to visit the Balbanera church. This is the oldest church in Ecuador. Then we drive into the National Park, where we stop at the first refuge at 4800 metres. We take a short walk to the Condor lake, which lies at an altitude of 5100 metres. Then we descend to 5000 metres for a hot cup of coffee at the second refuge. After the walk we are back at the first refuge, where our descent by bike begins. After 32 kilometres of downhill we arrive in the village of San Juan. The difficulty of the bike ride can be adapted to your wishes. During both the walk and the bike ride we can admire vicuñas in the magnificent landscape. Once we arrive in San Juan, a delicious lunch awaits us. From here we head back towards the hotel.

Biking the Atillo Lakes

From Guamote we drive by car to the paramos of Huantag (1 hour) at an altitude of 4100 metres. From here we take the bikes and descend (about 3 hours) along small roads to the Atillo river. Throughout the ride you can enjoy the wonderful scenery that the Ecuadorian highlands have to offer. After the descent by bike we continue our journey by car to the viewpoint over the Atillo lakes.

Atillo-Ozogoche trek

From Guamote we drive to the Atillo lakes (1 hour). The first part of the trek (3 hours of walking) takes us from 3600 metres to 4100 metres. From the viewpoint we have a magnificent view over both the Atillo lakes and the Ozogoche lakes. In good weather we can even see the Sangay volcano. From here it is another three hours' descent to the small village of Ozogoche. The landscape features beautiful vast grasslands with small and large lakes.

Ozogoche trek (2 days)

About 55 kilometres from Guamote lies the village of Ozogoche Alto. It is located within Sangay National Park. The park has more than 325 large and small lakes, 45 of which are in Ozogoche. During this two-day trek we hike around Lake Cubillín. We are accompanied by an English-speaking guide and a local guide. Our luggage is carried by a horse. The route goes from 3,800 metres to 4000 metres. We set up camp next to Lake Tinguicocha. During the hike you can enjoy the magnificent, deserted landscape.

The Giron waterfall

The Giron waterfall is one of the most beautiful spots in the region. A vehicle picks you up in the morning and takes you south to the small, picturesque village of Giron. In this subtropical area we hike to the waterfall. Afterwards we continue for another two hours to a second waterfall. Along the way we enjoy nature and learn about the plants and birds. We have a delicious local meal and then head back to the hotel.

Gualaceo, Chordeleg and Sigsig

A 45-minute drive from Cuenca in a subtropical valley is the town of Gualaceo, known for its artesanate, its folklore and for the beautiful river that runs through it. First, we visit a family that makes beautiful textile work. After this, we visit Ecuador 's largest orchid garden and then continue to Chordeleg which is known for its fine jewelry and precious metal forging. We have lunch in a local restaurant and then we visit Sigsig where the Panama hats are woven and a workshop where guitars are produced.

Birdwatching – Cajas National Park

Some 150 different bird species live in Cajas National Park. During this tour we can see about 45 of them. Around 6:00 in the morning a vehicle picks us up and takes us to the lower part of the park. Here we can spot around thirty birds, including the Masked Trogon and the Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan. Then we head to the higher part of the park. Here we can observe around fifteen species, including the endemic hummingbird, the Tit-like Dacnis and many other species.

The ancient culture of Valdivia

This small coastal village is the cradle of Ecuador's oldest known civilisation. The Valdivia culture is showcased in the small museum, where the pottery in particular catches the eye.

Horse riding on the beach and in the mountains

After getting acquainted with the horses, we receive some explanation about the places we are going to visit. We set off for the beach, where you can gallop or trot along the sand for about two hours (depending on your level). Then you head into the hills together with the guide, who tells you a little about the vegetation. Afterwards you return to Puerto Lopez.

Horseback riding in the Machalilla cloud forest

We make this trip in San Sebastián, which lies in the National Park and where there is a great variety of trees, birds, insects, monkeys and toucans. We do the trip on horseback, interspersed with short walks to spot birds. It is a mountainous area with irregular topography.

The Panama hats of Montecristi (Machalilla)

The famous Panama hats are woven from a local type of grass, the paja toquilla. The finer the weave, the more expensive the hat. In Montechristi you will find many local hat sellers. The return journey takes about 2 hours from Puerto Lopez. You spend 2 hours in Montechristi. On request you can also visit a family who make the hats at home. Duration of the excursion: 4 hours
